The Judicatory Vitality Assessment: a research-based assessment tool for dioceses, synods, and other judicatories

Several years ago, dioceses, synods, presbyteries, and other denominational judicatories that were using the Congregational Vitality Assessment (CVA) to assess the vitality and sustainability of their congregations began to ask FaithX if we could design a similar tool to help them assess their own vitality and sustainability.

So, FaithX took up the challenge and began conducting the necessary research to develop what would be known as the Judicatory Vitality Assessment (JVA). It was a considerable challenge, not only because it was the first of its kind, but also due to the complexity of the task. To diagnose the health of a judicatory, one must not only assess the vitality of its internal organizational functioning, but also the vitality of its various committees and commissions, and the health of the relationships between the judicatory and the congregations it supports.

After two years of research, design, development, and beta testing, we released the JVA for general use. And now JVA 2.0 is available for use.

The Judicatory Vitality Assessment (JVA) remains the first and only research-based, online diagnostic tool for assessing the vitality and sustainability of dioceses, presbyteries, synods, conferences, and other judicatory bodies.

The JVA will help your diocese:

  • Diagnose its Vitality and Sustainability
  • Identify its internal/organizational strengths and weaknesses
  • Identify its strengths and weaknesses in the way it relates to its congregations.
  • Develop and prioritize strategies to improve vitality and sustainability by leveraging strengths to engage opportunities.

The JVA measures how effectively a judicatory is carrying out 16 vital areas of judicatory functioning, including:

  • Vision, Mission, and Discernment
  • Congregational Engagement and Empowerment
  • Context Awareness and Inclusion
  • Change Readiness
  • Dealing with Differences and Conflict
  • Spiritual Life and Worship
  • Formation, Education, and Training
  • Outreach to Congregations
  • Leadership and Organization
  • Stewardship
  • Collaborative Ministry
  • Assessment and Evaluation
  • Infrastructure
  • Judicatory–Congregation Trust
  • Providing for Leadership Growth
  • Ministry Development and Redevelopment
